About FMPE

Mission

The Foundation for Medical Practice Education (FMPE) is a Canadian not-for-profit that offers practice-based learning programs created by family physicians for family physicians with a mission to provide programs that are collaborative, evidence-based, supportive, flexible and focused on practice change to enhance patient care.

Vision

To provide family physicians with the means to maintain and enhance professional knowledge and to integrate that knowledge into practice.

Core Values

Excellence

We strive for excellence in the creation and delivery of our programs. This involves rigorous development of evidence-based materials delivered through research-based educational approaches. Our process also includes careful consideration of the ethical dimensions of our programming.

Lifelong Learning

Beginning in residency and continuing throughout their career, we empower family physicians to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to change practice thereby optimizing patient care.

Community Of Practice

We support groups of family physicians to form communities of practice facilitated by trained peers. These groups provide a safe space to reflect on individual practice, benchmark against best-practice and address knowledge gaps. Communities foster an environment of engagement and personal growth where peers can flourish through professional challenges.

Sustainability

As a not-for-profit, our focus is on environmental, economic, societal and organizational best practices. This encompasses practical tools, resources, strategies and techniques to develop sustainable working environments that enable a less carbon-dependent future.

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI)

We are committed to Equity, Diversity & Inclusion in all aspects of FMPE. This informs human resources, administration, communications, and the development of educational materials. We strive to involve all stakeholders in the ongoing process of deepening our understanding and guiding our implementation of EDI principles.

Historical Background of FMPE

The Foundation for Medical Practice Education (FMPE) was founded in 1997 and dedicated to enhancing continuing professional development for family physicians. Our flagship small group learning program originated in 1992 under the leadership of Dr. John Premi at McMaster University. Over the past 30 years, the Practice-Based Learning Program has continued to evolve and maintain its innovative approach to promoting learning and practice change.

Scotland

The growth of PBSGL in Scotland has been nurtured by the FMPE in Canada, and this relationship has represented a mutually beneficial model of international collaboration. PBSG Learning is now an established workstream within NES and is guided by a multi-professional steering group within the organization. The two programs continue to work together to develop educational materials, to share research findings and to advance strategies to enhance the implementation of new knowledge into practice.

General Collaboration

Since 1992, FMPE’s programs have been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) for Mainpro+ credits. FMPE also has an ongoing collaboration with the CFPC delivering a physician well-being program. On occasion, FMPE collaborates with relevant Canadian organizations to produce modules.
