After our check-in with all programs regarding their use of the Resident Practice-Based Learning Program (PBLP), we were impressed by many schools’ engagement and regular use of our program to help deliver their core curriculum in an active learning model. Resident PBLP is based on the principles of facilitated group discussions centred around evidence-based learning modules, followed by reflection tools that stimulate real practice change.
One family medicine residency program that we are highlighting in this article is Memorial University’s Family Medicine Program. They have a centrally mapped curriculum and use our modules with trained facilitators. They have multiple residency placement sites and ensure consistent curriculum is available throughout all their sites.
At Memorial, trained resident facilitators lead virtual small groups, with the addition of one faculty member moving between the groups to observe each group for 15-20 minutes and to provide feedback to the resident facilitator later. This model helps faculty to be involved with multiple groups at a time, and there is the option to hold the group reflection tool as an overall larger group at the end with the faculty member or for each group to complete the reflection tool on their own, if they wish. Residents gain valuable transferable skills in leading small groups. Faculty can also choose to give feedback on their facilitation that is observed.
We look forward to continuing to work with all programs and hearing how we can support them in delivering core content, staying up to date with current medical practices, and improving practice long-term.
Dalhousie Family Medicine Education Weekend
We are excited to be participating in the Dalhousie Family Medicine Education Weekend as an exhibitor at their Resident Job Fair on September 21st in Halifax. This is our first time attending a job fair and we would love to support similar events at Universities across Canada who are part of our Residency Practice-Based Learning Program. Please email us at respbsg@mcmaster.ca if you have any upcoming resident events that you would like us to attend!
