Honouring Dr. Sarah Critchley – Board Representative for British Columbia, Alberta & Yukon

Dr. Sarah Critchley has been part of FMPE since her residency, bringing more than three terms of thoughtful leadership, enthusiasm, and heartfelt commitment to the Board. Known for always arriving well prepared and asking insightful questions, Sarah consistently helped the Board think more clearly, collaborate more effectively, and come together as a united group.

Her work in outreach, partnership-building, and advocacy strengthened FMPE’s presence across Western Canada and beyond.

“Serving on the Board was an education in itself. I learned what a governance board truly is, and how to step back and look at the bigger picture. Visiting the FMPE office at McMaster and attending Board meetings made me feel part of something truly special. It was an honour to serve.”—Dr. Sarah Critchley

Throughout her time on the Board, Sarah valued the opportunity to work closely with staff and fellow directors from across the country. She often spoke about how inspiring it was to meet people from such diverse backgrounds — from those colleagues who lead medical schools, residency programs, to provincial education systems.

“With three kids and a busy family medicine practice, those weekends away for Board meetings were a gift — time to focus on an organization I deeply believe in, enjoy great conversations, and admittedly eat a little too much.”

Sarah brought warmth and humour to the Board table, often recalling the many moments of laughter shared over colleagues’ “most embarrassing stories,” including the famously colourful tales from Newfoundland.

She cherished the uniquely national perspective within FMPE, noting how remarkable it was to discuss issues with peers spread from Victoria to Hamilton to Gander — sometimes amazed at the wildly different weather happening at exactly the same time.

“I carried everything I learned at FMPE into the other boards I joined in Victoria. I found myself sharing the strong governance principles I’d picked up here, and it genuinely helped strengthen those organizations too.”

As a community physician, Dr. Chritchley felt it was a privilege to work alongside such a committed and passionate group of educators and leaders. Her presence helped shape a Board culture defined by curiosity, collaboration, and genuine connection. FMPE is deeply grateful for her years of service and the many ways she strengthened the organization.

“I hope to stay involved with FMPE in some way. That’s really the heart of this organization — the physicians who use the program are the same people who help build it. From authors and editors to pilot groups and the Board, FMPE creates learning that builds community. It’s something truly special.”
