Indigenous Health Module: How You Can Help

A small family of Native American decent, sit around on the sofa together as they visit with the new baby and spend some quality time together. Mom, Dad and two brothers can be seen gathered around the new baby in Mom's arms.

It is well known that there are significant gaps in health outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. As stated in the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, to address these gaps, “non-Aboriginal medical practitioners must develop a better understanding of the health issues facing Canada’s Aboriginal peoples and of the legacy of residential schools.”

Guided by and in partnership with Indigenous colleagues, the Foundation for Medical Practice Education sees a role for itself in working towards reconciliation by developing an Indigenous Health module. We hope that this module will help FMPE members provide culturally safe care that aligns with the needs and circumstances of Indigenous people, respecting their cultural, historical, and social contexts.

We are looking for broad perspectives from FMPE members willing to take part in a 2-hour virtual meeting in order to:

  • Validate the module’s focus and learning objectives
  • Provide feedback on the cases and included readings/information
  • Participate in a discussion that will help inform the case commentaries

This meeting is projected to occur in November or December and your time will be remunerated.
