What is the Practice-Based Learning Program (PBLP)?
FMPE’s Practice-Based Learning Program (PBLP) is a continuing professional development program for family physicians. PBLP focuses on family physicians identifying and addressing practice gaps, exploring evidence-based resources and applying new knowledge to improve patient care. You can work through clinical cases supported by information from our evidence-based modules in a small group, on your own, or a combination of the two. Our longitudinal program centres on evidence-based learning modules and focused practice reflection encouraging successful practice change.
Who is eligible to join FMPE?
FMPE’s Practice-Based Learning Program is open to family physicians practising in Canada and internationally. The program also welcomes nurse practitioners, physicians’ assistants, pharmacists and internationally trained physicians. Our program is offered to family medicine residency programs and some primary care nurse practitioner programs across Canada, providing learning opportunities designed to support their professional development.
What learning formats are available?
FMPE offers flexible learning options to fit different schedules and learning preferences. Family physicians can participate in small peer groups, complete the PBLP modules independently, or combine both all with your annual membership.
Can I earn Mainpro+® credits?
Yes. FMPE’s Practice-Based Learning Program is certified for Mainpro+® credits through the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). Participants can earn credits by completing eligible learning activities in accordance with program requirements.
How much time does participation require?
The PBLP is designed to fit into busy clinical practice. Participants can choose the learning format that best suits their schedule, allowing them to engage in continuing professional development at a pace that works for them.
What topics are covered?
The PBLP addresses a broad range of topics relevant to family medicine, including chronic disease management, preventive care, mental health, women’s health, seniors’ care, child and adolescent health, acute care, and many other areas encountered in everyday primary care practice.
Can I participate online?
Yes. Many PBLP learning activities are available online, making it easier for family physicians to participate regardless of where they practise. Small groups can meet in person, online or a hybrid of both, providing greater flexibility and accessibility.

For Nurse Practitioners & Physician Assistants
Can Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants join the PBLP?
Yes. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) are welcome to participate in FMPE’s Practice-Based Learning Program (PBLP). The program supports continuing professional development through practical, case-based learning that reflects the realities of primary care in Canada.
Is the program relevant to my clinical practice?
Absolutely. The PBLP covers topics that are highly relevant to NPs and PAs working in primary care, including chronic disease management, preventive care, mental health, women’s health, seniors’ care, and complex patient management. Learning is practical, evidence-based, and designed to support improvements in day-to-day clinical practice.
Will I learn alongside family physicians?
One of the strengths of the PBLP is its interprofessional approach. Many learning groups include family physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants, creating opportunities to share perspectives, discuss real clinical cases, and learn from one another’s experiences.
Are there learning activities designed for interprofessional care?

Is FMPE open to international medical graduates?
Yes. Internationally trained physicians interested in family medicine in Canada are welcome to participate in FMPE’s Practice-Based Learning Program (PBLP). Can FMPE help me understand family medicine in a Canadian context?

Can I join while preparing for licensing examinations?
Yes. Many IMGs choose to participate while preparing for licensing examinations or exploring pathways into Canadian family medicine.
