How do I join the Practice-Based Learning Program (PBLP)?
You can join right away, whether or not you have a group. To get started, complete the Registration Form.
Do I require a group to join the program?
No. The Practice-Based Learning Program is fully flexible. You can choose to learn individually, in a group, or a combination of both. Joining without a group is a great option for those who prefer individual learning or want to get started while recruiting group members.
How do I join a small group?
If you know of an existing group that has agreed to accept you as a member, complete the online Registration Form.
How do I form a new group?
To form a group, gather at least four members and have one member complete the Forming a New Group contact form. One member will also need to volunteer to be the group facilitator. Each member should then complete the Registration Form.
Can I join a group at any time during the year?
Yes, most groups accept new members anytime during the year. If you join after March 15th, you may be eligible for a prorated membership fee. Contact us for more details.
What is the annual membership fee?
The annual fee for PBLP is $495 CAD per year. For members who prefer printed modules, there is an additional $50 fee for mailing, which is non-refundable and not prorated.
Do medical students receive a discount?
Yes, medical students are eligible for a 50% discount on the annual fee. Proof of student status is required.
How do I access the modules?
Modules are available online through your Members Online account in both PDF and web-based Interactive Module formats. We encourage members to access them electronically. However, for those who prefer physical copies, paper modules can be mailed quarterly within Canada for an additional $50 annual fee.
How many modules are available?
We publish 14 new modules each year, available to all members. You will also have access to a library of previously published modules through your Members Online account.
How many credits can I earn?
All PBLP members are eligible for the following credits:
- Individual Learning: Earn 5 Mainpro+ self-learning credits per module by completing the Personal Practice Reflection Tool (PRT) and Follow-Up PRT.
- Small Group Learning: Earn up to 3 Mainpro+ group learning credits per hour by attending both the initial and follow-up sessions, with your facilitator submitting both the Group PRT and Follow-Up PRT. If you miss either session, you will earn 2 credits per hour attended.
- Practice Improvement Activities (PIA): PIAs are certified for 2 Mainpro+ assessment credits per hour and are worth 20–40 credits, depending on the topic.
With these flexible options, PBLP provides a comprehensive solution to fulfill both your annual and 5-year cycle Mainpro+ credit requirements with the CFPC.
How does the program work?
As a PBLP member, you have access to both individual and small group learning options. You can participate in small group discussions to earn group learning credits and also complete modules on your own to earn self-learning credits. This flexibility allows you to customize your learning experience based on your schedule and interests. For example, if you miss a small group meeting or want to dive deeper into a topic, you can complete the module independently for additional credits.
How does the Practice Improvement Activity (PIA) work?
All members can participate in optional Practice Improvement Activities (PIA), which are quality improvement projects tied to PBLP modules. Each PIA is worth 20–40 Mainpro+ assessment credits, depending on the scope, and helps implement real practice change.
How often do small groups meet?
Small groups typically meet monthly or biweekly for 1.5 to 2 hours per session. Group members decide the frequency and format (virtual, in-person, or hybrid) based on what works best for them.
Can I complete a module individually if I miss my small group session?
Yes, if you miss a group meeting, you can complete the module individually and submit a Personal Practice Reflection Tool (PRT) and Follow-Up PRT to earn 5 Mainpro+ self-learning credits.
What is the Interactive Module, and how can I use it?
The Interactive Module is a digital version of the PBLP module designed for flexible, self-paced learning. It allows you to navigate content, bookmark information points, and take notes. You can use it to prepare for group meetings or complete modules independently. The Interactive Module is available in English and can be accessed through Members Online.
When are the next facilitator training sessions?
