What is the Practice-Based Learning Program (PBLP)?
Our PBLP focuses on family physicians identifying and addressing practice gaps, exploring evidence-based resources, and applying new knowledge to improve patient care. You can work through clinical cases supported by information from our evidence-based modules in a small group, on your own, or a combination of the two. Our longitudinal program centres on evidence-based learning modules and focused practice reflection, encouraging successful practice change.
Family Physicians
Since its inception, the Foundation for Medical Practice Education has supported family physicians across Canada with evidence-based continuing professional development. Today, our Practice-Based Learning Program (PBLP) offers the flexibility to learn independently, participate in facilitated small group discussions, or combine both approaches. Approximately 12.5% of certified family physicians in Canada participate in the program, using PBLP to support ongoing learning, practice reflection and improved patient care. PBLP supports your continuing medical education requirements. Earn up to 664 Mainpro+ credits over 36 months.
Nurse Practitioners (NPs)
Nurse Practitioners play an increasingly important role in team-based primary care across Canada. FMPE’s Practice-Based Learning Program (PBLP) welcomes NPs into a collaborative learning environment where practical, case-based discussions focus on topics such as chronic disease management, preventive care, mental health, and complex patient care.
With flexible individual and small-group learning options, PBLP supports your ongoing professional development while connecting you with nurse practitioners, family physicians and other healthcare professionals. Membership may also be eligible for reimbursement through your CME or CPD funding, depending on your organization or provincial guidelines.
Physician Assistants (PAs)
As primary care continues to evolve, Physician Assistants are playing a growing role in delivering patient-centred care. FMPE’s Practice-Based Learning Program (PBLP) provides practical, practice-based learning that reflects the realities of modern clinical practice.
Through flexible individual and small-group learning, PAs gain valuable insights into primary care while collaborating with family physicians and other healthcare professionals. The program supports continuing professional development and may be eligible for reimbursement through available CME or CPD funding, depending on your professional or provincial requirements.
Internationally Trained Physicians
FMPE’s Practice-Based Learning Program (PBLP) offers internationally trained physicians a valuable introduction to Canadian family medicine. Through flexible individual, small-group, or blended learning, participants gain practical insight into the Canadian primary care environment while connecting with a supportive community of practice.
If you are currently part of a residency program, you will have access to PBLP through your program (please look under the residency tab). However, you may want to join if you are preparing to apply to a residency program, writing a licensing examination or transitioning into Canadian practice. PBLP provides evidence-based resources within a small group environment or through individual access which facilitates exposure and engagement with the Canadian medical community, allowing development of familiarity with family practice in Canada.
