FAQ

What is the Residency Practice-Based Learning Program (Residency PBLP)?

The Residency Practice-Based Learning Program (Residency PBLP) is an evidence-based educational program designed to help family medicine residents develop the knowledge, skills, and reflective practice needed for independent clinical practice. The program is offered through participating family medicine residency programs across Canada.

How does the Residency PBLP work?

Residents participate in facilitated small-group learning sessions with four to ten participants. Using case-based PBLP modules and practice reflection tools, participants discuss real clinical scenarios, apply evidence to practice, and develop lifelong learning skills.

Who facilitates the learning sessions?

Sessions are led by trained faculty members and, in some programs, senior residents who have completed facilitator training. Facilitators guide discussion, encourage reflection, and help participants apply evidence to everyday family medicine practice.

Is the Residency PBLP accredited for Mainpro+® credits?

No. For Residents, the Residency Practice-Based Learning Program itself is not accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). However, trained Residency PBLP Facilitators may be eligible to earn Mainpro+® credits by completing the CFPC’s Linking Learning to Practice activity. Facilitators and Trainers cannot earn credits as this is part of their curriculum for completing the group PRT. Interested to use module learning for credits?  For more information, please visit How To Join.

How does the Residency PBLP prepare me for independent practice?

The program encourages residents to identify learning needs, critically evaluate evidence, reflect on clinical experiences, and apply new knowledge to patient care. These skills help support the transition from residency training to lifelong continuing professional development.

Does the Residency PBLP support exam preparation?

Yes. FMPE’s learning modules are mapped to the CFPC’s 105 Key Topics, making them a valuable resource for certification exam preparation while also supporting residency curriculum planning and clinical learning.

Is there a membership discount after graduation?

Yes. Family physicians joining the Practice-Based Learning Program within their first five years of practice are eligible for a 50% discount on membership. This provides an affordable way to continue practice-based learning and earn Mainpro+® credits after residency.

What is the Residency PBLP Scholarship Award?

The Residency PBLP Scholarship Award recognizes outstanding resident-led scholarly projects related to small-group learning, research, quality improvement, or educational innovation. Winning projects receive a cash award and complimentary membership in the Practice-Based Learning Program after graduation.

Who is eligible to apply for the Residency PBLP Scholarship Award?

Applicants must be family medicine residents currently enrolled in a Canadian Family Medicine Residency or Enhanced Skills training program. Projects should demonstrate innovation and contribute to evidence-based approaches to small-group learning and reflective practice.

How can my residency program participate in the Residency PBLP?

FMPE works with family medicine residency programs across Canada to integrate Practice-Based Learning into their curriculum. Residency programs interested in offering the program are encouraged to contact FMPE to discuss implementation, facilitator training, and curriculum planning. If you are a school or program, please contact residencypblp@mcmaster.ca for more information.
