Transforming Family Medicine: FMPE’s Top 10 Practice Change Tips Presentation Shines at FMF 2024

The Family Medicine Forum (FMF) 2024 took place from November 6–8, bringing together an enthusiastic group of family physicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Among the highlights was an engaging session presented by our very own Dr. Dana McKay and Dr. Haider Saeed. Their presentation, “Top 10 Practice Change Tips from Practice-Based Learning Program Modules 2023–24,” drew a large and attentive audience on Thursday, November 7. A special mention goes to Dr. Peter Tzakas, who was integral in developing this presentation.

In their one-hour session, the presenters shared essential tips for implementing evidence-based changes in family medicine practices. These “top 10” tips were developed through FMPE’s highly regarded Small Group Practice-Based Learning Program, which supports continuing medical education for family doctors. The program, created by family physicians for family physicians, offers the latest evidence on topics like benign prostatic hypertrophy, adult ADHD, and wound care. Its commitment to translating research into practical, patient-centred applications resonated with the crowd, and the speakers highlighted how thousands of Canadian physicians had embraced these changes.

Approximately 400 attendees filled the room, with an estimated half already familiar with FMPE’s offerings. Participation was high, with attendees enthusiastically engaging in polls and sharing their thoughts. Those new to FMPE seemed captivated, watching as fellow doctors eagerly demonstrated their commitment to this unique learning format. Dr. Sarah Critchley (FMPE Board Member), a participant in the session, shared an anecdote about audience members unfamiliar with FMPE, observing their curiosity as they saw the support and enthusiasm of current program members.

The positive response extended beyond the presentation. FMPE’s booth was bustling after the session, with attendees interested in learning more. FMPE staff members Carole Dermody, Karen Birthelmer and Louise Adam received positive feedback, with many expressing interest in the program’s approach to making practical, real-world changes.

One aspect that distinguished FMPE’s session from other “top 10” presentations at FMF was its focus on actionable advice. As Dr. Saeed pointed out, “FMPE’s list provided real-life examples of changes that could be adopted with minimal disruption but significant impact.” An example shared by the team was the use of the FRAX tool for assessing osteoporosis risk and the recommendation to avoid over-frequent BMD checks, suggesting checks only once every three years.

Following the session, FMPE connected with other healthcare organizations, including a physician from Waterloo who works on developing electronic medical record (EMR) tools for not-for-profit organizations. This potential collaboration could further integrate FMPE’s insights into EMR systems, making practice changes even more accessible. Dr. McKay also contacted physician recruiters and health authorities to explore FMPE’s role in aiding physician recruitment and retention, envisioning how the program could become a key component in building supportive medical communities for new physicians.

Overall, FMF 2024 was a fantastic showcase of FMPE’s commitment to evidence-based practice changes. The response from attendees underscored the importance of accessible, impactful medical education, and FMPE’s team left with fresh ideas, new connections, and a renewed sense of purpose in their mission to support family physicians across Canada.
